The Karachi Golf Club, home of the Pakistan Open
Golf Championships, the current curtain-raiser event on the Asian
PGA Tour, started in 1888. It is the oldest golf club in the city.
The first President of the Club was a British civil servant, H.
E. M. James (1894) and the first golf tournament to have been played
was Pritchard Cup in 1888 to mark the opening of the Club. It moved
to its present location near PNS Karsaz in 1953 as a 6,322 yards,
par-71, an 18-hole sandy course. This new location was ranked as
a classic desert course with barren and sandy fairways and chocolate
Greens. The whole area was dotted with numerous cactus and acacia
trees, and had undulations, water hazards, reeds and marshy areas
with typical flora / fauna, and because of these unique features
the course was rated amongst the 100 interesting golf courses in
the world.
In 1991, Peter Heradine, a well-known golf course
architect, was invited to design an 18-hole championship course.
This was completed in 1992 and by 1993 another 9 holes were commissioned.
The golf courses and its affiliated facilities are now located on
218 acres and the three courses are now known as Blue, Yellow and
Red. All three courses are par-36. In addition, there is a 9-hole
par-3 course for short game practice.
